Tummy Tuck: What Can I Expect?
2010
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a type of cosmetic surgery that helps to get rid of flabby, loose skin in the abdomen area. If you have lost a lot of weight or have excess abdominal skin due to pregnancy, you may be wondering what can be expected with this type of cosmetic surgery.
You can expect to have this type of cosmetic plastic surgery done in a hospital. General anesthesia is administered and patients can expect a hospital stay anywhere from one to three days following the procedure. Because it is a surgical procedure you will be instructed not to drink or eat anything six hours prior to the surgery. However, some surgeons will allow you to drink only water up to two hours prior to the surgery.
After you have had the surgery you can expect to experience some pain and discomfort for the first few days. It could take up to a week before the symptoms go away. Medication will be prescribed for your pain.
You will also notice some bruising and swelling in your abdomen area along with possible residual bleeding. Another common symptom is to have numbness below your belly button. Depending on your reaction to the anesthesia, you may also feel nauseous and experience vomiting.
In the days following your tummy tuck you will need to wear a special pressure garment over the area operated on. This garment will decrease the swelling and aid in healing. Many plastic surgeons will also recommend that you wear anti-thrombosis compression stockings the first few days following surgery to encourage proper circulation of blood in your legs. This helps reduce the chances of a blood clot forming. These garments are worn at all times unless you need to bathe.
During recovery you should avoid straining yourself, along with bending or lifting objects.
